With all the permits secured, and following test flights in March, a Lufthansa flight will be the first to land at the airport on April 10. Lufthansa weekly and biweekly flights will arrive here from airports in Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Dresden, Erfurt and Leipzig, but with higher-capacity planes than before. In addition, there are also ongoing negotiations about a flight to Basel, and a charter flight to Southern Europe in the summer.According to Tomcsányi, as long as the Balaton attracts tourists mostly only in the summer tourism season, it is obviously not economical to operate the airport through the winter, but they are working on extending the operating period as far as possible. The around-the-year operation, in addition to SCD's tourism investments along Lake Balaton, also depends largely on how well the airport's cargo traffic can be developed. The operation and maintenance of the airport costs around 500 million forints per year for SCD. With this spending, they calculate that the Sármellék airport will be able to again reach the nearly 150 thousand passenger traffic figure noted in 2008 only in 2012 at the earliest, and it is expected only on the medium term, after 2014, that traffic will reach the level needed for breakeven operations. In the first two years, the firm is calculating with traffic of 80, and then 100 thousand passengers. The airport would start generating discernible profits from passenger traffic of around 250-300 thousand per year. Naturally, if air cargo has a larger share of operations, the airport could also break even with smaller passenger traffic. Tomcsányi expects a boom in passenger numbers in the near future, as SCD's developments are expected to bring an additional 100-120 thousand tourists a year. However, the capital needed for the developments is still hard to get from banks. "We expect that the environment will only be suitable to launch the investments in 2011," he pointed out.
