Ennek legfőbb oka elemzők szerint vélhetően éppen az X tulajdonosa, Elon Musk, a világ leggazdagabb embere, aki átalakította a közösségi oldalt, és megafonként segítette Donald Trumpot a Fehér Házba jutni.
Bár a megválasztott amerikai elnök bejelentette, hogy Musk fogja vezetni az új kormányhatékonysági minisztériumot, ez korántsem jelenti azt, hogy a milliárdosnak fel kell hagynia üzleti vállalkozásaival. Továbbra is a magánszektorban dolgozhat, megtarthatja az X-et, valamint vezetheti az elektromos autókat gyártó Teslát és a SpaceX rakétagyártó céget.

A The Guardian azt is felidézi, hogy
Hónapokkal később azonban Elon Musk 44 milliárd dollárért megvásárolta a Twittert, kirúgta a tartalommoderátorokat, a Twittert átkeresztelte X-re, több millió felhasználótól vált meg, és visszaállította Donald Trump fiókját, amelyet a Fehér Ház elleni 2021. januári támadás után felfüggesztettek.
Az X-en tapasztalt változások azonban egyre nagyobb nyugtalanságot okoztak a felhasználók körében. Ismert médiumok és személyiségek hagyják el tömegesen a platformot.
A The Guardian és az Observer a múlt héten jelentette be, hogy jelenlétük az oldalon már tarthatatlan, és többé nem posztolnak ott. Stephen King író is távozott, mondván, hogy az X „túl mérgezővé” vált. Barbra Streisand és Jamie Lee Curtis ugyancsak elhagyta a platformot.
