A lap emlékeztet arra, hogy a Google már elismerte: ez a technológia veszélyezteti környezetvédelmi céljait. Az AI-infrastruktúra kulcsfontosságú elemei, az adatközpontok működtetése náluk 2019 óta 48 százalékkal emelte az üvegházhatású gázok kibocsátását.

Működésükhöz nagy mennyiségű elektromos áramra van szükség, amely energiaforrástól függően CO2-t termel, valamint a szükséges berendezések előállítási és szállítási költségéből „beágyazott” CO2 keletkezik.
A Nemzetközi Energia Ügynökség szerint az adatközpontok teljes villamosenergia-fogyasztása a 2022-es szintről megduplázódhat 2026-ra, ami megegyezik Japán energiaigényével. Egy másik tanulmány szerint a technológia vízfelhasználása is jelentős: a mesterséges intelligencia akár 6,6 milliárd köbméter vizet is igényelhet 2027-re, ami például Anglia éves fogyasztásának csaknem kétharmada.
A nagy kérdés tehát az, hogy a technológia képes lesz-e csökkenteni a mesterséges intelligencia környezetvédelmi költségeit, vagy az ipar ennek ellenére is használja az AI-t mert akkora hasznot tud a révén bezsebelni.
