By today, the economic role of industrial parks has increased considerably, with every fourth industrial employee working in one of the 199 industrial parks, and one-third of domestic industrial production being generated by companies in these parks. According to Lajos Rakusz, the president of the Association of Industrial Parks, priorities in the operation of the parks have become "capital organisation", innovation, postering the settling of small and medium-sized enterprises, and the setting up of scientific parks.
In addition, more efficient and qualified work must be promoted, because products and services with high added value must be produced for the market. The achievement of these goals is being helped by the operative programs of the New Hungary Development Plan, which have earmarked 250 billion forints in development funds for successfully applying parks for the period between 2007 and 2013.
Entrepreneur village in Pécs to be expanded
One of the country's successful industrial parks is the 150-hectare Pécs Industrial Park (PIP). Endre Brányi, the chief executive of the park's operator PIP Zrt. said that in addition to keeping and developing industrial operations, signifi cant steps are being taken to develop into a scientific-technology park, in cooperation with the city and the University of Pécs. Developments sped up from 2005, and today 46 companies, including a significant number of local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operate in the park, employing a total of 2700 people.
Future plans include securing state funds for building out public utilities on a further 25-hectare area of the park, further developing the entrepreneurial village built for SMEs, also with state support, building a new 3200-square metre industrial hall complex, and setting up the Pécs Health Industry Innovation Centre with a 3.5 billion forint budget. The latter would be one of the country's most modern research and innovation centres, housing pharmacological, medical biotechnological and nutrition science research and development activities.
Sought-after space in Debrecen Industrial Park
The Debrecen Regional and Innovation Industrial Park, also among the leading parks of the country, after building out modern infrastructure in an 800 million forint investment, has reached the point of quality developments, with the overarching goal of strengthening the industrial park's competitiveness, according to the strategy as summed up by Managing Director István Percze. The 40-hectare site today offers complex services, and their popularity is indicated by increased interest shown toward purchasing land in the park, as well as leasing space. The new developments, such as the Regional and Innovation Technology Centre inaugurated last year, serve this purpose as well.
These are having a positive effect on the region's rural development as well as its urban characteristics, while affording benefi ts to local small and medium-sized enterprises: domestic firms operating in the park have better chances of becoming suppliers to large multinational companies. The park's management generally supports the settling of those foreign and domestic companies which use modern technology and carry out investments in several phases in the longer term. The companies in the Debrecen Industrial Park, which together employ 3200 people, closed 2007 with good results. Total investments carried out by them reached 53 billion forints, while their revenues added up to 72 billion forints, with 95 percent of production exported.
