Hungarian unemployment rate falls to 7.5% in February-April

Unemployment in Hungary was 7.5% in the three-month period from February to April, down from 7.7% during the previous three months but up from 7.2% one year ago, according to data released by the Hungarian statistical office Friday.

This is the first time unemployment has fallen in Hungary since October last year.

The active workforce rose to around 3.9 mln during the period. The number of unemployed was around 318,000, some 18,000 more than last year and 5,000 more than in the preceding three-month period period.

Unemployment among the young remains high at 18.5% in the 15-24 age group, a drop of 0.5% on a year earlier.

The employment rate, or the proportion of people of working age who actively participate in the economy, remains low in Hungary at 50.6%.

45.3% of unemployed had been looking for work for more than one year while the average period of unemployment was 16.3 months during the period.

The EU's harmonized unemployment data shows Hungarian unemployment at 7.6% in March. This compares to an average of 7.7% in the EU-15 and 8.6% in the EU-25.
