Unemployment climbs further to 7.2% in February-April

Hungary's unemployment rate increased to 7.2% in the period February-April 2005, according to figures released by the Central Statistical Office (KSH).

The unemployment rate climbed another 0.1 pp from 7.1% in the previous three-month period and is also significantly higher than the 6.0 % rate recorded in the same period last year.
On a three-month average, the number of unemployed persons according to ILO methodology increased by 51,700 year on year to 300,100, and by 2,700 compared to the previous three-month period. Meanwhile, the size of the workforce was 3.875 million in February-April, 15,200 less than the base figure.
The 7.2% three-month unemployment rate compares to a 8.4% average unemployment rate in EU-15 countries and 9.3% in the EU overall in March, the midpoint of the three-month period, the KSH said.
Among the population aged 15-74, the labor market participation rate was 54.1% in February-April. Of those of employment age, 64.4% were economically active during the period.
Meanwhile, the average length of unemployment in Hungary was 16.2 months, up a notch from the previous three-month period. Some 45% of all unemployed persons were seeking work for over one year.
