Seasonally adjusted figures show growth of 3.0% for the first three months of 2005, while retail sales grew 0.4% in March compared to the previous month, according to seasonally and working day adjusted figures. Return to month-on-month growth follows a period of stagnation in February.
Growth was driven by non-food retail sales, up 5.6% adjusted in March and 6.0% in the first three months, while sales of food, beverages and tobacco were only up 0.2% in March and declined 2.7% for the year to date.
In March alone, the fastest growth was recorded in the pharmaceutical segment, as turnover was up 26.9%, while sales of second-hand goods (+21.3%) and mail orders (+14.4%) were also up significantly.
Hungary's retail figures continued to outperform EU averages. Average retail growth in the EU-25 was 2.1%, while in the original 15 member states it was 2.3% in March compared to the same month last year. Eurozone retail sales were up just 1.4% in the period.
