Growth was 11.7% in the first three months of the year. Seasonally and working-day adjusted month on month figures for March, however, showed a decline of 6.0% due to exceptionally high growth in February.
The KSH noted that civil engineering works - mainly motorway and road building - again accounted for the bulk of overall growth, rising by over 14.7% year on year in March. The volume of building construction and building installations was down 4.1% and 11.4%, respectively, on the year in March.
Order stock data indicate that the dominance of road building within construction output growth is set to remain the main feature of the sector in the coming year. Civil engineering order stock has more than doubled over the past year, due to giant motorway contracts signed in 2004. Meanwhile, orders for building construction rose by a much lower but still healthy 25% in March.
In a regional breakdown, growth was uneven in January-March. Construction output increased by 20-23% in central Hungary and in the northern Plains, whereas output declined by 7-8% in northern Hungary and the southern Transdanubia region.
