Pessimism in industry has "increased strongly" since April 2004, while outlook in industry regarding production and order stocks worsened during the month. Outlook regarding orders and production in the construction industry, however, was viewed more positively, while retail insiders expected business to improve in the coming months.
Consumer confidence continued its slide in April, continuing a trend that started at the beginning of the year. Consumers surveyed said that their own financial situation was worse than in March, while continuing to view the coming 12 months negatively.
Consumers were also negative about the economy as a whole, with most expecting inflation to rise over the year ahead. Despite this, consumers were more positive about spending in April than in the previous month. The number of those who believed the time was right to save also increased slightly on the month.
