US's NCR to open ATM manufacturing plant in Hungary

US-based NCR Corporation announced Wednesday that it will open an automated teller machine (ATM) manufacturing plant in Budapest, to provide the additional capacity needed to support the fast expanding markets of Eastern Europe and Russia.

The Budapest factory will complement existing production at NCR's Dundee and Scotland facility that is producing ATMs for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, NCR said in a statement.
"The demand we are seeing in Eastern Europe continues to push our Dundee manufacturing operations to capacity," said Keith Taylor, Senior Vice President of NCR's Financial Solutions Division. "We need a new facility physically closer to Eastern European markets to meet and manage that demand, and at the same time, lower our shipping costs."
The investment in Budapest is worth "several million dollars," said Richard Maton, NCR Director of Global Public Relations. "Manufacturing will begin in 2005 and the plant will reach full capacity by mid-2006," he said, adding that "[the company is] currently in discussion with the government" concerning possible state subsidies or tax allowances.
The new manufacturing plant, which will produce several thousand ATM terminals annually, will be further expanded in 2006 to suit capacity needs. The company will initially employ a workforce of around 50, with a potential to expand in case of sufficient demand, Maton said.
