The current unemployment rate compares to 6.1% measured a year earlier, while it picked up considerably over the past year. This was driven in large part by a jump in unemployment in the 15-24 age group, 23% of the total unemployed, which has grown from 16.6% to 20.4% over the past year.

The size of Hungary's workforce was 3.928 million in the July-September period, 21,000 more than the base figure. Compared to the beginning of the year, 57,000 more people were employed in July-September, which can only be partially explained by seasonal effects, the KSH noted.

At the same time, the number of unemployed persons increased by some 54,000 over the past year to 308,600. Among the population aged 15-74, the labor market participation rate was 54.9% in July-September, the KSH said.

In the meantime, the average length of unemployment in Hungary was 16.2 months, while some 47.4% of all unemployed persons were seeking work for over one year, up three percentage points from last year.
