Growth in construction industry output was 13.8% in the first six months of the year, up from 13.5% in the first five months. Seasonally and working day adjusted month on month figures for June showed an increase of 7.5%.
Civil engineering works - mainly motorway and road building - again accounted for the bulk of overall growth, rising by a massive 41% year on year in June. The volume of building installations was up 7.4%, while building completion was stagnant in June after decreases in recent months, the KSH noted.
Order stock data indicate that the dominance of road building within construction output growth is set to remain the main feature of the sector in the coming year. While civil engineering orders dropped by half in June, overall stock was still 27.6% higher than a year ago, due to large motorway contracts signed in 2004. Meanwhile, new orders for building construction increased by 19% in June, with the overall stock standing 3.5% higher than a year earlier.
