Wal-Mart CEO confirms plans for Hungarian entry

"We have a portfolio we are working on. It doesn't matter to us which of these will be first, we want all of them at some point," Scott said, adding that Wal-Mart wanted to continue achieving 30% of its sales growth from outside the US. Last year international sales accounted for 21% of Wal-Mart's USD 285 billion in sales, and for 31% of its annual sales growth of USD 28 billion. Reports confirm that Wal-Mart is preparing to enter the Hungarian market. In 2003, Wal-Mart established Global Sourcing Kft in Hungary with HUF 3 million (USD 15,000) capital, intended for export purposes. The company may now be used to set up retail operations.
Previously Wal-Mart was rumored to be one of the possible buyers for the supermarket chain Cora, which is in line with Wal-Mart's acquisition policy concerning the region. Scott reasoned that acquisitions "would make more sense than establishing new operations."
