Unadjusted growth in April was relatively high considering the fact that while Easter shopping in 2004 took place in April, this year's shopping spree rather affected March data. All in all, adjusted growth of 1% compared to March indicates invigoration in the retail sector in April.
Naturally, the Easter holidays had the largest impact on retail sales of food, causing an unadjusted 1% decrease, as opposed to a higher growth rate of 4.9% on an adjusted basis.
Non-food retail volume grew by 7.2%, driven by sales of books, newspaper, and other sales in specialized stores, as well as pharmaceutical and medical goods and cosmetics. Dynamic increase in revenues also applied to non-food sales in non-specialized stores, unlike the sluggish business of second-hand goods, furniture and household goods.
